We are absolutely buzzing. Our very own Lattice athlete and team GB climber, Erin McNeice, better known as @erinmcbeast has just won gold at the Boulder World Cup in Alcobendas, Comunidad de Madrid, topping all four problems in the women's final to finish on 99.1 points.
It's her second Boulder World Series gold medal win, and it comes just one week after a silver-medal performance in Bern. That’s two World Cups and two podiums, back to back!
The ‘Every Viewer had Sweaty Palms’ Final
Erin was the only climber in the entire field to top all four boulders. Going into the final problem, she'd already topped three, but with climbers Melody Sekikawa and Oriane Bertone both in the mix, there were certainly no guarantees.
What followed on boulder #4 was an absolute palm sweater to watch, and an incredible fight from Erin. Erin admitted afterwards that her beta was not perfect, with around 35 moves to reach the top, but she fought hard, stayed on the wall and topped out to win gold.
Erin McNeice: "I think I definitely got my sequence wrong a little bit. I made something like 35 moves. I'm very grateful that I'm also a Lead climber. My triceps were quite pumped when I came down. Not the best route-reading, but I'm glad that I managed to fight and get it done."
Performance coach and Lattice co-founder, Ollie Torr is one of Erin’s coaches supporting her behind the scenes. He told us how Erin is one of the few climbers he works with that can really tap into the last few percentage points of try hard:
Ollie Torr:”I think the last boulder is a great example of Erin's tenacity. She is like this in training, she is just not willing to let it go and really knows how to fight to the death - which I don't think many athletes actually do. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't the prettiest send but she got the job done."

Sights on Gold
What makes this result even more special for Erin, is that she had absolutely set out to win the gold in Madrid. After Bern, she had set her intention and, made it happen.
Erin McNeice: "One week ago, after the Bern World Cup, I wrote down that I wanted to win in Madrid. I felt so much pressure from myself. These feelings are a massive drive for me when they come from a place of belief. Standing back on the top of the podium feels indescribable. I knew I was going for gold, but winning on this stage is never a given. You have to fight for it."
That mindset, training, competing with belief and then fighting when it counts is exactly what Erin and her support team work on together. Seeing it pay off on the world stage is everything.
Ollie Torr: "Erin has had a really hard training season. We focused much more on bouldering, execution training and max strength capacity, so it's going to be a really interesting year to watch, not least because the Olympics is coming up next year. It's always hard to see an athlete work so hard in training and then start the season quite nervous, but in the last two competitions Erin has really shown what she can do, and she's worked hard for that. I'm really looking forward to seeing what she can do in the future."
A massive congratulations, Erin. On to Prague 🙌
