Lattice Training’s Climbing Coaching Team: Credentials & Expertise

Meet the Lattice Training climbing coaching team — GB pedigree, sports science degrees, and specialists in nutrition, mindset, and flexibility.

Who Are Lattice Training?

We are a UK-based climbing coaching and training company, built by Tom Randall and Ollie Torr in 2015. Our whole approach is built on data: we've built the largest datasets of climbing metrics in the world, drawn from years of testing and coaching climbers across every discipline and ability level, from complete beginners to elite athletes. That data sits alongside real hands-on coaching experience, which is really the key to what we do. It's not just spreadsheets and finger strength charts, it's coaches who've built their expertise coaching climbers to achieve their goals.

We offer everything from fully coached, one-to-one training plans written by our coaches, to app-generated LatticePlans that adapt to your training data automatically. So whether you want a coach checking in on your progress or a smart plan that adjusts itself, there's an option at a few different price points.

Our Climbing Coaching Team, As a Whole

Let's be real, the reason you're here reading this article is to answer the question:

Are the Lattice coaching team any good?!

Short answer? Yes!

But let's look at the calibre of the team as a whole rather than just taking our word for it.

Our coaches are, collectively, some of the most credentialed in UK climbing. Several hold sports science degrees at first-class or distinction level, covering areas like Strength and Conditioning, Applied Sports Science, and Physiotherapy. Formal coaching qualifications held by some members of the team include Mountain Training Development Coach status and BMC course creation and delivery credentials, alongside years of hands-on coaching experience that in some cases stretches over two decades.

Our team's competitive and personal climbing pedigree is just as strong. Between them, our coaches have represented Great Britain internationally, managed GB senior teams and coached GB junior squads, held national championship titles for multiple consecutive years, and put up first ascents at the top end of both bouldering and route climbing, including climbing several coaches climbing up to 9a, E11, V13, and 5.14b. This matters to us because it means the people writing your training plan have generally faced the same plateaus, injuries, and grade barriers you're trying to break through, rather than coaching from theory alone.

Beyond general strength and performance coaching, our team also covers a broad spread of specialisms. On the nutrition side, we have coaching backed by Olympic-level sports nutrition qualifications. For climbers navigating pregnancy and postpartum, we have a coach who's a qualified Pregnancy and Postpartum Corrective Exercise Specialist, giving safe, structured programming through every stage of that journey. On the mobility side, our flexibility coaching is led by a qualified FRC Mobility Specialist with a background in yoga and movement teaching, who's spent 10+ years helping people build joint health and functional range of motion, and now applies that specifically to helping climbers move better on the wall. And for the mental side of the sport, we have dedicated mindset and performance psychology support, helping climbers work through fear, plateaus, and competition pressure. With that range of expertise across the team, there's more than likely a coach whose specific background matches exactly what you're dealing with.

Our coaches don't work in isolation either. We run regular coach catch-ups and internal training sessions, so the team is constantly sharing what's working with their own clients, learning from each other's specialisms, keeping up-to-date on the latest research, and staying aligned on our coaching methodology. That means when you work with any one of our coaches, you're not just getting their individual knowledge, you're getting the benefit of a whole team that actively supports and learns from each other.

What Makes Our Climbing Coaching Stand Out

A few things come up again and again when people ask whether we're worth it:

  • Real climbing pedigree. Our coaches aren't personal trainers who picked up climbing on the side. Multiple have climbed at 8c/V13 and above, and several have represented GB internationally.
  • Specialisms beyond generic strength plans. Nutrition, pregnancy/postpartum, mindset, and flexibility are all covered by named specialists on our team, not bolted on as an afterthought.
  • Data-backed methodology. Our training plans are informed by a large internal dataset of climber performance, not just anecdotes.
  • Range of price points. From fully coach-written plans to app-generated adaptive plans, we've got a tier for people who want more or less hands-on support.

So, Are Lattice Coaches Good?

Based on our coaches' qualifications, competitive pedigree, and personal climbing achievements, we'd say our coaching team is one of the most credentialed and experienced in UK climbing. The mix of sports science backgrounds, national team experience, and coaches who are still climbing at a high level themselves is a very strong combination!
