Working with coach Jemma, you will discuss some of the major physiological and psychological considerations when training during pregnancy and postpartum recovery so that you can continue to exercise safely.

Suitable for climbers of all levels—from beginners to elite athletes. A session is 1 hour and delivered online via Google Meet.

What could you cover in these sessions?

  • Learn about the physiological changes that occur during pregnancy.
  • Learn how to maintain strength during pregnancy to support a smooth and confident return to climbing postpartum.
  • Develop a better understanding of how training may need to be adjusted to meet your body’s changing needs, helping to protect the pelvic floor and prevent complications such as prolapse, urinary stress incontinence, and hernias.
  • Gain greater awareness of breathing and pressure management to train safely and effectively throughout your pregnancy; learn to breathe in ways that support the pelvic floor and abdominal canister, during everyday activities and while climbing or training; where appropriate, practice guided breathwork to facilitate deep core activation and effective pressure management.
  • Develop strategies for dynamically assessing risk before sessions, allowing you to climb and train while minimising risks to you and your baby.
  • Explore the aspects of climbing and training that are most important to you, ensuring your expectations and goals align with your personal values for motivation and satisfaction.

Who is Coach Jemma?

Jemma Powell is a highly experienced coach and athlete who joined the Lattice coaching team in July 2022, bringing over 30 years of climbing experience and a passion for empowering women through strength and conditioning. Before joining Lattice, Jemma spent six years coaching intermediate to elite-level climbers and is deeply committed to injury prevention, an area of expertise shaped by her own experiences during her competitive climbing career. Jemma holds a first-class Master’s degree in Applied Sports Science, with a focus on modules such as the Psychology of Injury – Prevention and Rehabilitation, Performance Physiology, and Performance Psychology. Her research explored the impact of competition anxiety on performance through attentional losses.

As a former GB Climbing Team athlete, Jemma competed internationally for 10 years, holding the title of British Champion for five consecutive years and achieving multiple international podium finishes. Since becoming a mother, Jemma has rediscovered her passion for climbing and training, reaching personal milestones such as climbing 8b sport and bouldering 8A while balancing the challenges of parenthood. She continues to pursue ambitious climbing goals on the limestone crags of North Wales.

In addition to her impressive athletic background, Jemma is a Pregnancy and Postpartum Corrective Exercise Specialist. She is dedicated to supporting women as they navigate the transformative journey of pregnancy and postpartum life. Her coaching provides a safe, empowering space to address concerns about training adaptations, the effects of pregnancy on climbing, and balancing strength, mobility, and recovery. Jemma’s consultations are relaxed and conversational, designed to dynamically meet the individual needs of her clients. With her blend of professional expertise, personal insight as a mother of two, and extensive coaching experience, Jemma is committed to helping women feel confident, motivated, and supported during this exciting chapter of their lives.

All sessions must be paid for upfront. After payment, Jemma will contact you via email to arrange a date and time for your first consultation.

  • You must be over 18 years of age
  • This coaching is not designed to diagnose or treat any illness or injury. Please consult with your own medical professional/midwife and/or sports coach/instructor before starting any new exercises. If the conversation goes beyond Jemma’s remit, she will signpost you in the direction of further support.
  • Whilst Jemma will be there to share knowledge, answer questions, and provide support, she expects you to show openness and honesty. Some of the subject matter may be challenging or of a personal nature, but through establishing trust Jemma is best able to guide you during your pregnancy.v
