What equipment do I need to do a LatticePlan?
The short answer? Exactly what you already have. Whether you’re training at a fully-stocked commercial gym or grinding it out in a garage with nothing but a hangboard and a pull-up bar, your LatticePlan now builds around your actual setup.
In our latest app v4.3.0 update, we’ve added new questions to the plan generation quiz about your equipment availability at home and at the gym. Say goodbye to impossible-to-complete workouts 👋
How Hard Constraints Shape Your Plan
When you build your plan, you tell us where you train — home, gym, or both — and now, this also includes what specific equipment is available at each. Once you hit generate, the algorithm applies hard constraints to every session.
For example:
- If you train at home with just a hangboard and a pull-up bar, you won’t see heavy barbell work.
- If your gym has a system board, but no campus board, campus sessions simply won’t appear.
We would much rather prescribe a slightly less ‘optimal’ workout that you can actually complete than a theoretically perfect workout that you can’t.
This should be a massive improvement to the plans, especially for home-only trainers: your plan will stop looking like it was designed for a commercial mega-gym, and start looking exactly like plans built for a garage woody.
If you’ve given the app a try in the past and found yourself closing it because you literally can’t do the session, or having to get creative devise your own similar training session, we’re super excited for you! This feature in the v4.3.0 update should solve most of (if not all!) of these problems!
30 Seconds to a Better Plan
We know nobody wants a longer plan generation quiz, so we designed this to be visual, straightforward, and incredibly fast. The new equipment setup adds one screen and takes about 30 seconds.
We’ve also pre-selected sensible minimum defaults (like a pull-up bar and hangboard for home; roped and bouldering walls for the gym). For most climbers, you can just glance at the defaults, confirm them, and move straight on to generating your plan.
Navigating the ‘What Ifs‘
We know training isn’t always perfectly static. Here is how the new system handles real life, edge cases, and changing schedules:
- What if I travel or drop into a different gym? Short-term travel or temporary location changes are exactly what our new ‘Switch Workout’ feature is for. Instead of completely rebuilding your plan for a weekend trip, just use ‘Switch Workout’ to swap out that individual session for a genuine one-off.
- Can I edit my equipment mid-plan? We don’t allow mid-plan equipment edits at this time. If your equipment changes, you’ll need to regenerate your plan; during the plan generation quiz, you’ll have the opportunity to select your new equipment availability.
- What if I train at three or more locations? We intentionally limited the setup to two core locations (home and gym). We found that adding a third or fourth location didn’t improve plan quality; it just made the setup burdensome. Pick the two places you spend the vast majority of your time, and use ‘Switch Workout’ for your occasional drop-in days elsewhere.
- Will my plan always match perfectly? In very rare edge cases, the algorithm might include an exercise that requires equipment you didn’t check. This only happens as a fallback to avoid failing your plan generation entirely. If you spot one, just use ‘Switch Workout’ to swap it out. We track these edge cases and will be refining the algorithm over time.
Your training plan should fit your life, not the other way around. Update the app, tell us what gear you’ve got, and let’s build a plan you can actually crush 💪
